The Man in the Moon

A couple of nights ago, while pulling into my garage, I saw one of the most magnificent full moons in the night sky.

I wanted to share it with you all, my darlings. Hawaii's weather hasn't been all the great this week, with the storm, flooding, hail and even a tornado, but I wanted to remind you that beyond these disasters exist the marvelous beauty, and wonder of nature...

Just like the scientists who, for centuries, have observed and studied the moon, I too, have always been fascinated by its mystery. From the eyes and heart of a dreamer, I look at the moon like I do the sunshine.

I think we can always turn to the man in the moon (or the goddess of the moon) to give us hope.

“The moon is friend for the lonesome to talk to.” ― Carl Sandburg

"We all shine on...like the moon and the stars and the sun.." - John Lennon

“We must strive to be like the moon.' An old man in Kabati repeated this sentence often... the adage served to remind people to always be on their best behavior and to be good to others. [S]he said that people complain when there is too much sun and it gets unbearably hot, and also when it rains too much or when it is cold. But, no one grumbles when the moon shines. Everyone becomes happy and appreciates the moon in their own special way. Children watch their shadows and play in its light, people gather at the square to tell stories and dance through the night. A lot of happy things happen when the moon shines. These are some of the reasons why we should want to be like the moon.”
― Ishmael Beah

“The moon is a loyal companion. It never leaves. It’s always there, watching, steadfast, knowing us in our light and dark moments, changing forever just as we do. Every day it’s a different version of itself. Sometimes weak and wan, sometimes strong and full of light. The moon understands what it means to be human. Uncertain. Alone. Cratered by imperfections.” ― Tahereh Mafi

“When hope is fleeting, stop for a moment and visualize, in a sky of silver, the crescent of a lavender moon. Imagine it -- delicate, slim, precise, like a paper-thin slice from a cabochon jewel. It may not be very useful, but it is beautiful. And sometimes it is enough.” ― Vera Nazarian

“I never really thought about how when I look at the moon it's the same moon as Shakespeare and Marie Antoinette and George Washington and Cleopatra looked at.” ― Susan Beth Pfeffer

When you feel like the whole world is crushing down on you, always look at the moon, and remember that there is a bigger, more complex world out there. That you are not alone. And yes, you can always talk to the moon ;)

Giving Back- The Great Aloha Run 2012

The 28th Annual Great Aloha Run was held this past President’s Day, Monday February 20th and I had a wonderful opportunity to be a GAR volunteer alongside a few of my good friends Juvy & Jena Cudera, Retch Manipon and Slay Oyao.

Sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, the Great Aloha Run is an 8.15 mile course that begins at Aloha Tower and ends at the Aloha Stadium. This year had the largest number of participants. I was not physically prepared to run or walk 8+ miles, but assisting with refreshments for the runners was definitely a yes. At 4 in the morning I woke up groggy-eyed, but totally ready to pass out bananas and macadamia cookies to the finishers of the race. Yes, macadamia nut cookies…

It was another great bonding event for us amigas. Most importantly, we gave back to our community by contributing our time to assist in a charitable event that greatly impact our communities- improving the lives of those in need.

Volunteer work, whether it is miniscule or on a large-scale is personally fulfilling and satisfying as we recognize that we can make a difference- in people’s lives within our community, our country and even the world.

Madness in my schedule will not take me away from my desire to save the world.

eternal sunshine

I was browsing through my online album and I came across one of my favorite photos. Taken five years ago by a talented aspiring photographer at the time, Keoni Kitagawa, this photo captured a candid, yet blissful moment.

It was nearing a day’s end in beautiful Hawaii nei, with the sun setting behind me. The weather was pleasant as I had remembered it- warm, yet breezy; not too hot, not too windy.

If I were to choose a photo that I could hold in my heart forever- to move me, to encourage me, to teach me… I would choose this photo.

Because this photo shows me an eternal sunshine.

The sun shining- whether it be rising, or setting, symbolizes hope to all. Sometimes we feel that the world is dark, and we may be at the bottom at times. But the sun is always there, and we will get back up, one way or another.

Figuratively speaking, no matter how terrible or rainy the day goes, you just have to breathe…because tomorrow the sun will rise. If the rain keeps coming, you just have to remember that it takes rain AND sunshine to make a rainbow ;)

"Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine."
Anthony J. D'Angelo

A daily dose of sunshine is good for you- it’s brightening and exhilarating. Drink it up, my darlings. Don’t live in the shadows.

Honey

Not Just A Pageant- A Celebration of Women In the Armed Forces

Susan Page Modeling is producing its first annual Ms. Armed Forces Hawaii 2012 Pageant on Saturday, March 24th at Mamiya Theater. There are 13 lovely ladies vying for the title, all of whom are 18 years old and older and are either active duty or spouses/dependents of military personnel in the different branches of service- Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marine, and Air Force.

Ms. Armed Forces Hawaii

President and Owner of Susan Page Modeling, and Founder of the Ms. Armed Forces Hawaii Pageant, (and also one of the most inspirational people in my life) Mrs. Rebecca Schumacher designed the pageant to celebrate women of the Armed Forces. “It’s not just a pageant, it’s an experience,” Rebecca tells the candidates.  Of course it’s so much more than a competition- it’s an experience that will create new friendships and wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. Some of the contestants have already been featured in our Fall Fashion Show in December entitled “Winter Wonderland”, showcasing wedding gowns from one of the pageant’s sponsors, B’Ellagance Bridal & Gowns.

Beginning this Saturday, January 28th, the ladies will be attending a six-week pageant training course instructed by Pageant Director Marybeth Jenkins. Additional events and activities lined up for the ladies include a makeup workshop with Keahi Kirley, hair clinic sponsored by L’Oreal, a photo shoot with Damien Bujeker, and a zumba and fitness session with Miss MMA Hawaii Leslie Kaleiwahea.

Like the previous pageants, I will be assisting in the Administrative side and also designing the pageant book, as well as donating some handmade jewelries on behalf of Fashion with A Mission.  As of today most of the paperwork have been completed, including the judging criteria and what it means to reign as the Ms. Armed Forces 2012.

The objective of this pageant is to showcase our beautiful, intelligent, and strong women of the Armed Forces as well as the women who support a loved one serving in the Armed Forces. The ultimate goal of the judges is to evaluate and select a winner who is a strong role model and demonstrates a positive attitude towards her family and her country. She must have strong physical, mental and emotional characteristics that set her apart from other delegates. She must be poised, graceful, and elegant and firmly stands for what she believes in while being supportive and understanding in others opinions. Ms. Armed Forces Hawaii is a woman who posses all attributes of a beauty queen- a woman who is sincere, and knows how to maintain her integrity and humility in everything she sets to accomplish. Ms. Armed Forces Hawaii is a woman who is beautiful inside and out--- someone who is very proud of her country and in her position within the Armed Forces.

The contestants will be judged in four phases of competition: Swimwear (15%), Talent/Spokesmodel (20%), Evening Gown (30%), Interview (25%), and overall Personality (10%).

An impressive panel of judges within the modeling and entertainment industry in Hawaii has been selected, and three of the five judges have been confirmed including Hawaii's Ari Gold, Premier Models & Talent Director/Owner Douglas Lange, the beautiful and exotic Miss Hawaii USA 2011 Angela Byrd, and the legendary Ms. Susan Page herself! Dignitaries from the Armed Forces and the community will also be in attendance.

Winners will receive cash prizes, modeling scholarship, photo shoot, a modeling contract, beauty baskets, gift certificates, jewelries and other great prizes from our pageant sponsors. The newly crowned Ms. Armed Forces Hawaii 2012 will also be donating 10% of the ticket proceeds to her choice of Special Services, which means the more tickets we sell, the more we can donate to a cause.

Tickets are at $25.00 per person Pre-sale price, and $30.00 at the door.

How exciting, another new venture in the world of pageantry. Who will wear the crown?

Love,
Honey
